Adani Successfully Integrates Mumbai into the 400 KV National Grid, Bolstering Power Supply for the Metropolis

Adani Energy Solutions Limited has successfully integrated Mumbai into the 400 KV national grid with the commissioning of the Kharghar-Vikhroli transmission line. This pioneering project, long overdue and awarded to Adani in 2021 through a competitive bidding process, now provides Mumbai with a robust 400 KV connection, addressing the city's escalating electricity demands.

Mumbai, a bustling metropolis, faced crippling grid failures on two occasions, 27 February 2022 and 12 October 2020, plunging localities into darkness for extended periods. The Kharghar-Vikhroli transmission line, with an additional 1,000 MW power capacity, stands as a steadfast solution to mitigate such incidents in the future. It not only fortifies Mumbai's electricity grid but also enhances import capability and ensures a more stable and reliable power supply, vital for seamless commuting via bullet trains, Metro Rail, city railways, and sustaining commercial and residential establishments.

The Kharghar Vikhroli Transmission Limited (KVTL) encompasses approximately 74 circuit kilometers of 400 kV and 220 kV transmission lines. This includes the groundbreaking 1,500 MVA 400 kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Vikhroli, a pioneering feat for Mumbai. With an innovative vertical stacking design, minimizing space requirements, the substation sets new standards in compactness. AESL overcame numerous challenges during construction, including difficult terrains and height restrictions in urban areas, demonstrating their commitment to providing a reliable power network.

Starting in the Kharghar area of Navi Mumbai, traversing urban locations, and terminating at Vikhroli in Mumbai city, the KVTL project encompasses vital components like the 400 kV/220 kV GIS Vikhroli substation, Air Insulated System switchyard at Kharghar, 400 kV double/multi-circuit Kharghar-Vikhroli line, and strategic loop-in loop-out (LILO) connections. This monumental undertaking positions Mumbai at the forefront of modern power infrastructure, setting a precedent for sustainable energy solutions.

Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL), formerly Adani Transmission Limited (ATL), spearheaded this endeavor, epitomizing the Adani Group's dedication to innovative energy solutions. AESL, the country’s largest private transmission company, boasts a vast network of operational and upcoming transmission lines, coupled with a distribution business serving over 12 million consumers in Mumbai. As India's energy demands continue to surge, AESL stands poised to construct a reliable power transmission network, playing a pivotal role in achieving the goal of 'Power for All.'
