Lieutenant General VMB Krishnan has assumed charge as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command, succeeding Lieutenant General RC Tiwari, who retired on March 31, 2026.

Commissioned into the Indian Army on June 11, 1988, Lt Gen Krishnan brings nearly four decades of diverse military experience, spanning command, staff and instructional roles across challenging operational environments.

An alumnus of premier military institutions, he has commanded an Infantry Battalion and an Infantry Brigade in the super high-altitude terrain of Siachen. In key strategic assignments, Lt Gen Krishnan has served as Director General Information Technology at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army) and as Defence Attaché at the High Commission of India in London. Prior to his current appointment, he held the position of Quarter Master General at Army Headquarters, where he led significant reforms in supply chain management and infrastructure, enhancing operational sustainment and overall combat readiness.

He also holds the prestigious appointments of Colonel of The Dogra Regiment and the Dogra Scouts. As Commandant of the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School, he contributed to strengthening specialised training and doctrinal development.

Upon assuming command, Lt Gen Krishnan paid tribute to fallen soldiers and urged all ranks of Eastern Command to maintain the highest standards of operational preparedness. He emphasised the importance of jointness, faster technological integration and close coordination with stakeholders to ensure sustained peace and stability in the eastern theatre.

The appointment marks a key leadership transition in one of the Indian Army’s most strategically significant commands.
