Five Essential Checks That Can Boost Cooling Efficiency, Cut Electricity Bills, and Extend Your Machine's Life

With temperatures climbing rapidly through March and April, millions of Indian households are pulling out their coolers after months of storage — often to find that the machine underperforms, consumes more electricity than expected, or breaks down within days. The culprit is almost always the same: a cooler switched on without any preparation after a long period of inactivity. A few simple checks before the season begins can make all the difference.

1. Give It a Thorough Clean First

Coolers stored in storerooms or on rooftops accumulate months of dust, dirt, and cobwebs. Before switching on, clean the tank, fan, and internal components with water — not just the exterior. This not only improves airflow and cooling efficiency but also ensures the air circulating in your room is clean and free of dust particles.

2. Inspect and Replace the Cooling Pads

Cooling pads are the heart of any air cooler, and they deteriorate with time and use. Worn, hardened, or dust-clogged pads significantly reduce cooling performance. Check the condition of the pads carefully — if they appear too old or damaged, replace them. Fresh, clean pads can make a noticeable difference to the temperature of the air they produce.

3. Test the Water Motor and Pump

If the pump is not circulating water properly, the cooling pads will remain dry and the cooler will function as little more than a fan. Run the pump separately before operating the full unit — clean it if blocked, or replace it if the damage is beyond cleaning. This single check can prevent the most common cooler complaint of warm air output.

4. Check the Fan and All Wiring

Extended periods of disuse can loosen wiring connections and affect fan performance. Before the first run of the season, check fan speed and inspect all visible wiring for signs of looseness or damage. Any wiring issues should be addressed by a qualified electrician before the cooler is operated — this is as much a safety precaution as a maintenance one.

5. Always Use Clean, Fresh Water

Filling the cooler with dirty or stale water is a common mistake that leads to unpleasant odours, bacterial growth, and reduced cooling. Always use clean, fresh water, and make it a habit to drain and clean the tank regularly throughout the season to keep both the air and the machine fresh.
