India To Play First-Time Host To 10 ASEAN Foreign Ministers From June 15-17

In what can be termed as proof of its growing international clout, India has been designated to host foreign ministers of 10 countries of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) between June 15 and 17. The meeting is likely to discuss engagement of China in the Indo-Pacific region but there might be other points of agenda as well. ASEAN, an association of Southeast Asian nations, works with the mandate to promote economic development in the region along with working for its peace and stability.

The 11 member countries of this Association are - Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. India will host such a meeting for the first time, in which foreign ministers of 10 ASEAN nations will participate to discuss the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), a statement regarding which was issues recently in Tokyo by India, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, United States and Vietnam In the statement, the signatories committed to a "free, open, fair, inclusive, interconnected, resilient, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region." They reiterated that only then could the region achieve "sustainable and inclusive economic growth." Another fact that is worth mentioning in this context is that the Chinese Foreign Minister had recently gone on a tour of Australia, South Korea and the Philippines, in, what is seen as an attempt by China to improve its relations with the new governments in these countries.
