Bihar to Revive Closed Sugar Mills, Plans to Set Up 25 New Units Across State

Sugarcane Industry Minister Sanjay Kumar says locations being identified in 25 districts; move aimed at boosting jobs and farmer income under Saat Nischay

Minister of Sugarcane Industry, Mr. Sanjay Kumar, stated that in addition to restarting the closed sugar mills in Bihar, new sugar mills will also be established. Letters have been sent to 25 district officials instructing them to identify locations. The Sugarcane Industry Minister made these remarks during a press conference held in his office at Vikas Bhawan on Tuesday.

He stated that nine sugar mills in the state have been closed for several years. The government led by Chief Minister Mr. Nitish Kumar has decided to create as many jobs as possible in the state so that the people of Bihar can find employment within their own state. In response to this, a decision has been made to renovate the closed sugar mills in the state under the "Saat Nischay" (seven resolves). The Sugarcane Industry Department is also working rapidly to establish 25 new sugar mills in the state.

Sugarcane Industry Minister Shri Sanjay Kumar stated that district officials have been directed to identify locations for the establishment of new sugar mills in Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Samastipur, Gaya, Shivhar, Siwan, Rohtas, Motihari, Bettiah, Patna, Purnia, Vaishali, Saran, Nawada, Buxar, Bhojpur, Begusarai, Khagaria, Jamui, Bhagalpur, Nalanda, Banka, Madhepura, Madhubani, and Darbhanga in Bihar.

He stated that sugar mills will be established in Rayam in Darbhanga district and Sakri in Madhubani district through the Cooperative Department. The Sugarcane Industry Department has given its consent to prepare the DPR for this purpose. He stated that the Sugarcane Industry Department is working to fulfill the Chief Minister's promise of providing 10 million jobs in the state. The goal is to commission all new sugar mills within five years.

There are 10 operational sugar mills in the state.

Sugarcane Industry Minister Mr. Kumar stated that 427.14 lakh quintals of sugarcane were procured from farmers through the sugar mills operating in the state during the 2025-26 crushing season, and that ₹1395.38 crore has been paid to farmers against the total amount of ₹1589.69 crore due. Farmers' dues represent 87.78 percent of the sugarcane price. Action is underway to secure payment of the remaining outstanding amount.

Sugarcane Commissioner Anil Kumar Jha, Joint Sugarcane Commissioner Jai Prakash Narayan Singh, and others were present on the occasion.
