The Gauhati High Court Bar Association has decided to boycott the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new High Court building scheduled for January 11 at Rangmahal in North Guwahati, reiterating its opposition to relocating the court's principal seat.

The decision follows a resolution adopted at the Association's Emergent Extra-Ordinary General Meeting held on January 6.

Consistent Opposition to Relocation

In a press release signed by President Kamal Nayan Choudhury and Secretary General Girin Pegu, the Bar Association stated its position has been "repeatedly reflected in earlier resolutions as well as in a referendum conducted among its members."

"In view of the resolution of the General Body, the Association has decided to abstain from participating in the proposed Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony," the release stated.

Appeal for Unity

The Association appealed to all members to honour the collective decision and refrain from attending or participating in the programme "in any manner whatsoever," emphasizing the need to maintain unity, discipline, and institutional dignity.

The release clarified that adherence to General Body resolutions is "an essential component of institutional discipline."

Hunger Strike Announced

As a peaceful and democratic form of protest, the Association announced a hunger strike on January 8, 9, and 11. The protest will be held from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in front of the old Gauhati High Court building near Gate No. 4.

The press release formally placed on record the Bar's considered and collective stand against the proposed relocation plan, which has been a contentious issue among the legal fraternity in Assam.
