India Hits One Billion Tonne Coal Output For Second Straight Year
Milestone reinforces energy self-reliance as record coal stocks maintained at thermal power plants amid global supply pressures
New Delhi: India has achieved the landmark of one billion tonnes of coal production for the second consecutive year, the Ministry of Coal announced, describing the feat as a significant marker of the country's growing energy self-reliance and its capacity to sustain uninterrupted fuel supply to key industries.
The Ministry said the sustained billion-tonne output level has enabled India to effectively meet rising energy demand while supporting the power sector in maintaining record-high coal stockpiles at coal-based thermal power plants — a development that assumes particular significance amid the global energy disruptions triggered by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
The Ministry attributed the consecutive milestone to proactive policy interventions, rigorous performance monitoring, and sustained stakeholder engagement, all of which it said have created a stable, transparent, and performance-driven ecosystem for coal production. The government said it remains committed to ensuring reliable coal availability and seamless operations across dependent sectors.
The achievement has been framed within India's long-term national development framework, with the Ministry stating that sustained domestic coal production reinforces the government's resolve — aligned with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision — to build a resilient energy infrastructure, expand domestic production capabilities, and drive sustainable economic growth.
