Mumbai’s traffic police have launched a major crackdown on autorickshaw and taxi drivers who refuse short-distance rides — a common complaint among commuters. As part of a special enforcement drive held between April 18 and May 2, the traffic department has begun the process of suspending the driving licences of 28,814 drivers for denying passengers these trips.
According to officials, the action comes after 48,417 drivers were penalised for various violations during the drive. These included not wearing proper uniforms, operating without valid permits or documents, carrying more passengers than allowed, and refusing short-distance fares.
The police collected fines totaling ₹40.25 lakh during the campaign.
A senior traffic official confirmed that licence suspension proceedings are now underway for those specifically found guilty of refusing short rides — a violation that continues to frustrate thousands of Mumbai commuters daily.
