Seven Years of Web Journalism: How WJAI Helped Digital Media Find Its Voice in India
From years of marginalisation to national recognition, the journey of the Web Journalists Association of India reflects the rise of web journalism as a credible pillar of democracy, says national president Anand Kaushal.
The face of journalism in India has rapidly changed. In this journey from paper to screen, web journalism not only transformed the flow of information but also gave new dimensions to democratic discourse. In these changing times, the Web Journalists Association of India (WJAI)'s journey over the past seven years tells the story of digital journalism's struggle, establishment, and acceptance.
Web journalism was long marginalized—with no institutional recognition, no protection, and no unified voice. To fill this void, the Web Journalists Association of India was founded seven years ago. This was not just the beginning of an organization, but the start of a fight for the self-respect and rights of web journalists.
From Struggle to Organization
In the early years, the organization faced challenges on many levels. However, efforts to organize web journalists, provide a platform for their problems, and establish dialogue with the administration continued. Gradually, the organization emerged as a platform that gave digital journalists recognition and confidence.
The organization's national president, Anand Kaushal, considers this journey not just a journey of achievements, but a journey of values. He says, "Web journalism is the most influential medium of information today. Our goal has never been merely to create an organization, but to provide web journalists with a path to progress with respect, security, and accountability. Digital media is the backbone of democracy, and strengthening it is the responsibility of all of us."
2023: A National Voice Rises from Patna
The 2023 event held at Hotel Panash in Patna marked a significant turning point in the organization's history. Several ministers, senior journalists, and media figures were present on the same platform.
This event was not merely a ceremony, but a center of serious discussion about web journalism—where issues such as rights, security, and media freedom were openly discussed.
2025 - Acceptance of Digital Journalism in Delhi
Following this, the national-level event held at Hotel Blue Radisson in New Delhi in 2025 was a major achievement for the organization. The presence of Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar as the chief guest gave the event national recognition.
This platform sent a clear message that web media is no longer just an alternative medium, but has become an effective pillar of the mainstream.
December 2025 - A Historic Chapter in Bhagalpur
The most powerful and historic milestone in this seven-year journey was the event held in Bhagalpur at the end of 2025. The presence of many prominent and respected journalists, including former Union Minister Ashwani Choubey, Brajesh Singh, and Prof. Sanjay Dwivedi, made the event special.
This event underscored the social and political significance of web journalism, where digital media was recognized as an important part of democratic discourse.
The Organization's Role and Future
Over these seven years, the Web Journalists Association of India has not only organized events but has also worked tirelessly on issues such as journalist training, digital ethics, media law, and journalist safety. In many cases, the organization has spoken out against harassment of web journalists and established dialogue with the administration.
Today, when challenges like information warfare, fake news, and digital pressure are looming, the role of WJAI becomes even more crucial. The organization's future will depend on how it maintains responsible, fair, and public-friendly web journalism.
A Successful Journey
The seven-year journey of the Web Journalists Association of India is proof that with organized efforts, a clear vision, and journalistic values, digital media can also become a strong guardian of democracy.
This is not just the story of one organization, but a collective journey towards respect and acceptance for web journalism in India.
