Chennai: In a significant development for Tamil Nadu’s public education system, 448 students from government model schools have qualified in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, the School Education Department announced.
According to an official statement, the students, who pursued their schooling under the Tamil Nadu School Education Department, cleared JEE Main — the first stage of the national-level engineering entrance examination process.
The Joint Entrance Examination is conducted in two stages — JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Candidates who clear JEE Main become eligible for admission to National Institutes of Technology and other centrally funded technical institutions, and also qualify to appear for JEE Advanced, the gateway to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
The National Testing Agency conducts JEE Main in two sessions every year. For the academic year 2028–27, the first session was held on January 21, 22, 23 and 28. More than one lakh candidates had applied for the examination, and 1,04,663 students appeared. The results were declared on February 10.
Against this backdrop, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department stated that 448 students from government model schools secured qualifying marks in the examination.
Additional Chief Secretary (School Education) Chandramohan said students from model schools across the State had cleared JEE Main. Pravan from the Tiruvannamalai district model school secured 53 percentile, while Naresh scored 36.30 percentile. Velmurugan from the Ranipet district model school also secured qualifying marks.
The department further highlighted that in the last four years, 2,358 students from government schools have gained admission to 20 premier institutions, including IITs, National Law Universities and the National Institute of Fashion Technology. Several students are currently pursuing their studies in IITs.
In addition, 17 students have enrolled in 17 universities in Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia with full financial assistance from the Tamil Nadu government.
Since the inception of the model school initiative in 2001, as many as 39,044 students have progressed to higher education through admissions to leading institutions, the department said.
The model schools were initially established in 10 educationally backward districts to facilitate access to national-level and global institutions. The initiative has since been expanded to all districts across Tamil Nadu.
Apart from preparing students for national-level entrance examinations, the schools provide training in life skills, music, dance, literacy, self-defence and English communication. The Tamil Nadu government continues to bear the full cost of education for students who secure admission to premier institutions in India and overseas, Chandramohan added.
