Unani Day 2026 Celebrated in Patna, Bihar Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening AYUSH Services
State AYUSH Committee hosts scientific symposium at Gyan Bhawan, honours legacy of Hakim Ajmal Khan and highlights expanding Unani healthcare access across Bihar
On the occasion of Unani Day 2026, the State AYUSH Committee, Bihar, Patna, organized a scientific symposium and felicitation ceremony based on the Unani system of medicine on February 11, 2026, at Gyan Bhawan, Patna. The program commenced with the lighting of a lamp.
Mr. Vaibhav Choudhary, Additional Secretary-cum-Executive Director, State AYUSH Committee, Bihar, was the chief guest. Distinguished guests included Mr. Shailesh Kumar, Special Secretary, Health Department; Mrs. Anupama Singh, Joint Secretary, Health Department; Mr. Shashank Shekhar Sinha, Chief Executive Officer, Bihar Health Protection Committee; and Mr. Alok Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, State Medicinal Plant Board, Bihar, Patna, along with several senior officials and subject matter experts.
On this occasion, the Honorable Health Minister, through his video message, highlighted the historical heritage, scientific basis, and current relevance of the Unani system of medicine. He stated that the Unani system is a holistic system of medicine based on treatment according to the body's nature (temperament), which treats the underlying cause of disease. This system places special emphasis on lifestyle modifications, natural medicines, and a balanced diet and lifestyle, which leads to long-term health benefits. He stated that the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, and the State AYUSH Committee, Government of Bihar, are continuously working to strengthen AYUSH systems, expand research, and services, so that safe and alternative treatment options are available to the general public.
Mr. Vaibhav Choudhary, Executive Director, State AYUSH Committee, stated that Unani Day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the great physician Hakim Ajmal Khan, who played a historic role in preserving, promoting, and systematically disseminating the Unani system of medicine. His efforts provided institutional support to Unani medicine, establishing it as a reliable treatment system.
Mohammed Shafiq, Administrative Officer, State AYUSH Committee, stated that Unani medicine is an ancient, holistic, and scientific health system based on a holistic approach that provides treatment by taking into account the body's temperament, natural balance, and lifestyle. It addresses the root cause of disease, not just its symptoms. This system emphasizes enhancing the body's immunity and maintaining long-term health through the use of natural medicines, herbs, dietary balance, and daily routine modifications.
Dr. Dhananjay Sharma, State Program Officer, State AYUSH Committee, delivered his welcome address, stating that even today, Unani medicine continues to play a vital role as an effective, safe, and cost-effective alternative in the management of many chronic and lifestyle-related diseases. Therefore, Unani Day provides an opportunity to highlight the importance, utility, and contribution of this rich medical tradition to public health.
During the symposium, experts discussed in detail the principles of Unani medicine, its relevance in the modern context, its effectiveness in treating various diseases, and its role in public health. Unani medical officials and physicians who have made outstanding contributions to the AYUSH sector were honored.
To expand Unani medical services in the state of Bihar, consultation, treatment, and medicines are being provided to the general public through Unani dispensaries and joint AYUSH units operating in various districts.
