India Change Hotels Ahead of T20 World Cup Final, Delay Semi-Final Over Eclipse — Superstition Takes Hold in Camp
Team Wary of Narendra Modi Stadium's Mixed History as High-Stakes Final Against New Zealand Looms on Sunday
Superstition has firmly taken hold in the Indian cricket camp ahead of Sunday's ICC Men's T20 World Cup final against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. According to a PTI report, the team has switched hotels — abandoning their originally booked accommodation for an alternative in the city — in the hope that the change might bring better fortune ahead of the title decider.
The decision is believed to have been influenced by India's painful memories at the Narendra Modi Stadium. In 2023, India entered the ICC Cricket World Cup final at the same ground as overwhelming favourites — only to lose the title to Australia in one of Indian cricket's most heartbreaking moments. Earlier in the current tournament, the same venue witnessed India's heaviest passage — a 76-run hammering at the hands of South Africa in the Super Eight stage. For a squad that is acutely aware of this history, the hotel switch appears to be an attempt to psychologically reset ahead of the biggest game of the tournament.
The hotel change is not the only superstition-driven episode of the tournament. Before the semi-final against England, the Indian team reportedly delayed taking the field by approximately 45 minutes due to a lunar eclipse — reflecting the widespread traditional belief in India that certain activities should be avoided during an eclipse. The delay, unusual in a high-stakes knockout match, underscored just how seriously the team is treating matters beyond the boundary.
Indian cricketers have long been known for their superstitious practices during major tournaments, and Suryakumar Yadav's side appears to be no different. As Sunday's final approaches, the team is evidently determined to control every variable in their environment — rational or otherwise — as they bid to defend the T20 World Cup title they won in 2025.
