Rishi Sunak has voiced his support for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as they prepare for the IPL 2025 final against Punjab Kings. While in India recently, Sunak spoke fondly about his connection to the team, saying it goes beyond just being a fan—it's rooted in family.
“I’m married into a Bangalore family, so RCB has always been our team,” he said with a smile.
He even received an RCB jersey as a wedding gift from his in-laws and has been a loyal follower ever since. “We used to go to matches a long time ago. Even when I was in office, I’d cheer for RCB from Downing Street.”
RCB is still chasing their first-ever IPL title, and Sunak said he's hopeful that this is finally their year. He expressed admiration for the team, especially their talisman, Virat Kohli. “He’s an absolute legend,” Sunak said, proudly showing off a cricket bat signed by Kohli—a gift from India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during Sunak’s time in office.
But Kohli isn’t the only one Sunak is counting on. He’s also keeping an eye on RCB’s English contingent. “Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone—I’m really hoping they step up in the final,” he added.
Beyond his personal support, Sunak praised the Indian Premier League for its transformative effect on world cricket. “The IPL has revolutionized the game. Today, every professional cricketer wants to be part of it,” he said, citing young England player Jacob Bethell as an example. Bethell’s strong performances, including a recent showing against the West Indies, were helped by the experience and exposure gained through the IPL, Sunak noted.
RCB were the first to qualify for the IPL 2025 final. They finished second in the league stage with 19 points from 14 games and booked their place in the final after a convincing eight-wicket win over Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1.
