After a sensational performance in Birmingham earlier this month — where he smashed 430 runs in the second Test against England — Shubman Gill hit his first major hurdle in the series. In the third Test at Lord’s, the India captain managed only 16 and 6, and the dip in form has cost him in the latest ICC Test rankings.

Gill’s double-century (269) and follow-up 161 at Edgbaston had powered India to a record 336-run win and lifted him to a career-best sixth in the rankings. But with just 22 runs in the third Test — which India lost by 22 runs, falling 1-2 behind in the series — Gill has now slipped three places to ninth, with a rating of 765.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant also dropped in the rankings released on Wednesday. Jaiswal, who was dismissed for 13 and a duck by Jofra Archer in both innings at Lord’s, slipped to fifth. Pant, despite scoring a gritty 74 while battling a finger injury in the first innings, dropped one spot to eighth.

England’s Joe Root has reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings following his century at Lord’s. Root, now on 888 rating points, overtook teammate Harry Brook (862), who dropped to third behind New Zealand’s Kane Williamson. This marks Root’s eighth stint as the world’s top Test batter. At 34, he also becomes the oldest to hold the position since Kumar Sangakkara, who topped the charts in December 2014 at the age of 37.

On the bowling front, India’s Jasprit Bumrah continues to lead the ICC Test rankings with a commanding 50-point advantage over South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, maintaining his position as the top-ranked Test bowler.
