Vaibhav Sooryavanshi turned 15 on Friday — one day before IPL 2026 kicks off — crossing the ICC's minimum age threshold for senior international cricket and setting the stage for what could be one of the most anticipated debut conversations in Indian cricket in years.

Under ICC Player Eligibility Regulations Article 4.1, a player must be aged 15 or above on the date of the first match of a series or tournament to be eligible for international cricket at the U19 level and above. Introduced in November 2020 to protect the welfare and physical safety of minors, the regulation had been the sole formal barrier between Sooryavanshi and a senior India cap. With that barrier now removed, selectors could consider him for international duty as early as after IPL 2026 concludes.

Sooryavanshi's credentials are staggering for any age, let alone 15. Picked up by Rajasthan Royals for a record Rs 1.1 crore in IPL 2025, he announced himself to the world in just his second IPL match with a sensational 100 off 35 balls. His domestic record is equally jaw-dropping. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, he became the youngest List A centurion at 14 years and 272 days, smashing 190 off 84 balls against Arunachal Pradesh — in the process breaking AB de Villiers' record for the fastest 150 in List A cricket, reaching the milestone in 59 balls. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he struck an unbeaten 108. Representing India A in the Rising Stars Asia Cup in Doha, he blazed 144 off 42 balls against the UAE.

His crowning moment came at the U19 World Cup 2026, where he was named Player of the Tournament after leading India to their sixth title — culminating in a defining 175 off 80 balls, including 15 sixes, in the final against England.

With India in a transition phase in Test cricket and the 2028 T20 World Cup cycle building momentum, selectors are expected to monitor Sooryavanshi closely through IPL 2026. A senior T20I debut post-IPL appears the most likely first step, with selectors unlikely to disturb the ODI setup ahead of the 2027 World Cup. At 15, time is emphatically on his side — and the cricketing world is watching.
