At least 60 people were killed in a massive fire that broke out at a hypermarket in Al-Kut, a city in Iraq’s Wasit province, according to reports quoting provincial governor Mohammed al-Miyahi on Thursday.

Videos shared online showed part of the building engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing into the sky. The footage, though unverified, quickly went viral as news of the tragedy spread.

A city health official told Reuters that 59 bodies have been identified so far, while one was so badly burned that it has yet to be confirmed. Authorities said more bodies are still being recovered from the site.

The cause of the fire is still unclear. Iran’s state news agency INA reported that initial findings from the investigation are expected within two days.

Governor al-Miyahi said lawsuits have been filed against the building’s owner and the mall management in connection with the incident.
