Several parts of Europe are currently enduring the first major heatwave of the summer, with health warnings issued across multiple countries. A heat dome is affecting France, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey, and forecasters say even more intense heat could spread to other regions in the coming days, according to the Associated Press.

Heat warnings have been announced for parts of Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, and the UK. Temperatures are expected to peak on Wednesday, though some areas may see relief later in the week as rain moves in.

Here’s the latest update:

* Barcelona has experienced its hottest June since record-keeping began more than 100 years ago, with the Fabra Observatory reporting an average temperature of 26°C this month. This breaks the previous June record of 25.6°C set back in 2003.

* In France, Météo-France has issued the highest level of heat alerts for several regions, with the Paris area hit particularly hard. Temperatures in Paris are expected to reach up to 41°C on Tuesday, prompting the closure of the top level of the Eiffel Tower to visitors for the next two days. Around 1,350 schools across France are either partially or fully closed due to the heat, and over 5,000 households have experienced power outages, according to Bloomberg.

* Italy’s health ministry reports that 17 out of its 27 major cities are currently under a heatwave alert. Tragically, in Bologna, a 46-year-old construction company owner collapsed and died while repaving a school parking lot, state broadcaster RAI reported.

* Across the Iberian Peninsula, temperatures could climb even higher, with forecasts predicting up to 43°C in parts of Spain and similarly high temperatures in Beja, Portugal. On Sunday, Evora, Portugal, recorded a new June record of 46.6°C. London is expected to reach 34°C before temperatures cool down starting Wednesday.

This intense heatwave is causing serious disruptions and health risks, with officials urging people to take precautions to stay safe.
