Trump Announces 100% Tariffs on Foreign Films and Furniture to Boost U.S. Industry
Tariffs Aim to Revive U.S. Film and Furniture Industries, Target Foreign Competition
Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday announced sweeping new tariffs targeting foreign-made movies and furniture, saying these industries have been "stolen" from the United States by other countries. The announcements were made through a series of posts on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump declared a 100% tariff on all films produced outside the United States, arguing that the American movie industry—once a global powerhouse—has been undermined by international competition. He specifically pointed to California, blaming what he called its “weak and incompetent Governor” for the decline in domestic film production.
“Our movie-making business has been stolen from the United States of America by other countries, just like stealing candy from a baby,” Trump wrote. “Therefore, in order to solve this long-time, never-ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
In a separate post, Trump turned his attention to the American furniture industry, singling out North Carolina—a state historically known for furniture manufacturing. He said the state had “completely lost” its industry to China and other countries, and promised to impose “substantial tariffs” on foreign-made furniture in response.
“In order to make North Carolina GREAT again... I will be imposing substantial tariffs on any country that does not make its furniture in the United States. Details to follow!” he wrote.
These announcements follow a broader trade offensive unveiled by Trump earlier this week. He introduced a 100% tariff on pharmaceutical products made outside the U.S., though companies currently building manufacturing facilities domestically would be exempt. Trump clarified that “building” meant any plant either “breaking ground” or already “under construction.”
Other newly announced tariffs include a 50% levy on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture, and a 25% tariff on heavy trucks.
Trump's latest trade measures signal a renewed push toward economic nationalism and domestic manufacturing—key themes of his political platform as the 2024 election cycle intensifies.
