With Muizzu by his side, PM Modi receives 21-gun salute at Maldives Independence Day celebrations
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Male, Maldives on Friday to attend the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations, where he was honoured with a 21-gun salute.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on an official visit to the Maldives, was warmly welcomed with a 21-gun salute during the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations. He attended the event as the guest of honour, invited by President Mohamed Muizzu.
This marks Modi’s third visit to the Maldives as Prime Minister and the first visit by any foreign leader since President Muizzu took office. Upon arrival at Male airport, Modi was greeted by President Muizzu along with several senior cabinet members, including the Foreign, Defence, Finance, and Homeland Security ministers.
During his two-day visit from July 25 to 26, Modi is set to hold important talks with President Muizzu and inaugurate multiple development projects supported by India across the Maldives.
In anticipation of his arrival, the Maldivian capital was decked out with vibrant banners, large posters, and Indian flags lining the streets. Key areas like Republic Square and the main roads from the airport were decorated to welcome the Prime Minister.
Large crowds of the Indian diaspora gathered near the airport and along Modi’s route, waving the Indian flag and chanting slogans in greeting. Modi expressed his gratitude on Twitter, thanking the Indian community for their warm reception and highlighting the strong ties between India and the Maldives.
Modi's visit, which is crucial for regional diplomacy and maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean, was warmly received in Male, reflecting both official goodwill and popular support.
