Gold price update: Latest rates for 24-carat and 22-carat gold in major cities on March 12, 2025

The prices of gold keep fluctuating. The price of 24-carat gold came down to Rs 86,024 on Wednesday. 22-carat gold is used to make jewellery and this gold is 91.6 percent pure. But the effect is that by adulterating it, 89 or 90 percent pure gold is sold as 22-carat gold. That is why whenever you buy jewellery, make sure to get information about its hallmark.

Purity of gold according to hallmarking:

375 hallmark → 37.5% pure gold

585 hallmark → 58.5% pure gold

750 hallmark → 75.0% pure gold

916 hallmark → 91.6% pure gold (22 carats)

958 hallmark → 95.8% pure gold (23 carats)

990 hallmark → 99.0% pure gold

999 hallmark → 99.9% pure gold (24 carats)

All carat gold has a different hallmark number. For example, 999 is written on 24 carat, 958 on 23 carat gold, 916 on 22 carat, 875 on 21 carat and 750 on 18. This leaves no doubt about purity. Carat gold means 1/24 percent gold, if your jewellery is of 22 carat then divide 22 by 24 and multiply it by 100.
