PM Modi's Rooftop Solar Initiative Illuminates Homes and Job Prospects Across India

In a groundbreaking move to foster sustainable energy and economic growth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship initiative, PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, is set to revolutionize the residential solar landscape in India. The Union Cabinet's approval of the scheme on Thursday with a staggering total outlay of Rs. 75,021 crore has sparked widespread enthusiasm.

Under the scheme, households stand to benefit from a significant Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for installing rooftop solar systems. With a CFA of 60% for 2 kW systems and 40% for additional capacity up to 3 kW, the subsidy amounts to Rs. 30,000 for 1 kW, Rs. 60,000 for 2 kW, and Rs. 78,000 for 3 kW systems or higher. The application process, facilitated through the National Portal, allows households to choose vendors and access collateral-free, low-interest loans of around 7% for systems up to 3 kW.

The initiative goes beyond individual homes, with the creation of Model Solar Villages in every district, showcasing the potential of rooftop solar in rural areas. Urban Local Bodies and Panchayati Raj Institutions will also receive incentives to promote rooftop solar installations in their respective regions.

The impact of PM-Surya Ghar is not limited to electricity savings alone. Households are expected to generate more than 300 units a month with a 3 kW system, resulting in additional income through surplus power sales to DISCOMs. The scheme aims to add an impressive 30 GW of solar capacity in the residential sector, reducing 720 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions over the 25-year lifetime of rooftop systems.

One of the most significant aspects of the initiative is the potential for job creation. An estimated 17 lakh direct jobs are expected to be generated in various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, sales, installation, and operation and maintenance.

With the Government launching an extensive campaign to raise awareness, interested households can now register on https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in to avail themselves of the transformative benefits under PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. As the scheme takes flight, it promises not only to light up homes but also to illuminate a path towards a greener, job-rich future for the nation.
