A Gift of Hope: Social Media Helps Muzaffarpur Girl Get a Bicycle

In a quiet corner of Muzaffarpur’s Kanti block, in the small village of Pakri, a heartwarming story unfolded on Tuesday — one that underscored how compassion, amplified through social media, can bring change faster than bureaucracy ever could.
Kirti, a school-going girl who lost her father recently, used to walk several kilometres each day to attend her tuition classes. Her struggle moved Shivani, a socially active local resident, who took it upon herself to help. “I knew she was walking long distances alone every day after her father’s death. I spoke to Gaurav Rai in Patna about it, and he immediately assured help,” Shivani said.
True to his word, Gaurav Rai — a corporate employee known for his consistent social initiatives — mobilised help overnight. “Shivani’s message came to me, and I posted about Kirti’s situation on social media. Within minutes, responses poured in,” Rai recalled.
What followed was a spontaneous act of collective kindness. Members from different cities and professions — Bhumihar Mahila Samaj’s Preeti Priya, Ashwani Kumar, Rishi Kumar from Godda, Santosh Kumar from Dehradun, and Rai’s own niece — pooled in funds. Within a day, a brand-new bicycle was delivered to Kirti’s doorstep.
