Deepa & Priyanka Biswas are pioneers who have worked tirelessly to preserve and promote Kathak in Nagpur

Kathak, one of the Indian classical dances that once flourished in the country with the support of the kings and rich, is now fading due to a lack of support combined with the dominance of western culture. Priyanka Bishwas, with the support of her mother Deepa, is one of those driven by their passion for the ancient dance form to make determined efforts for the rejuvenation of Indian dances like Kathak. Deepa began teaching Kathak to three students 35 years ago. 

Deepa Bishwas attempted to start the class with three female students; today, many of the girls, as well as their mother and grandmother, have degrees in classical dance. Her daughter Priyanka has been a huge help in this, and she is the one who came up with the new name P.K.C. Priyanka Kathak Classes currently operates two branches in Nagpur. During the Corona period, they had the opportunity to connect with the situation and new students online. She is one of the Nagpur pioneers who have worked tirelessly to preserve and promote Kathak since its inception. Her passion for Kathak and her desire to promote it among the young, particularly girls, led her to become a Kathak instructor 30 years ago, and she hasn't looked back since. She has over 500 performances to her credit, including Deepa Bishwas' attempt to start the class with three female students; today, many of the girls, as well as their mother and grandmother, have degrees in classical dance. Talking about her passion for Kathak, Deepa Bishwas stated, " My breath and my joy is Kathak. It opened up for me a new life. I feel I was born for propagating Kathak in bringing its past glory. Our main effort is to take classical dance to the country and abroad and to introduce all the children to Indian dance." At the moment, girls from all over the country and the world are learning the Kathak. There is currently an opportunity to teach children from both sides completely online and offline. Girls can benefit from both Kolkatta International University's online and Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva University's offline programmes. Social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook have greatly aided people in joining them. She has not limited herself to performance and teaching but also took up posting videos with the support of her students on select Kathak dances on various themes that are popular on YouTube for the benefit of young keen on learning more about Kathak to induce them to practice it and observed after it is the young who have seen Kathak get back its glorious days.
