Ed Sheeran Surprises Fans with Auto Ride in Mumbai, Sings Punjabi Lyrics in New Song Tease

Ed Sheeran just gave his Indian fans a delightful surprise! The global music star shared a new video of himself enjoying a classic Mumbai auto-rickshaw ride while singing his upcoming track, Sapphire. But what really sent fans into a frenzy were the unexpected Punjabi lyrics in the song.

In the cheerful video, Ed can be seen cruising through the vibrant streets of Mumbai, high-fiving passersby, soaking up the sun, and singing along to a preview of Sapphire, which drops on June 5. “Riding around the streets of India missing high fives. Sapphire out June 5th, 8:30am ET / 1.30pm BST / 6pm IST,” he captioned the video.

While fans were already thrilled by the visuals, the Punjabi line “Cham cham chamke sitare vargi” struck a chord. Social media lit up with comments like “I’m SOOOO excited for Sapphire” and “This is gonna be THE SONG of the year.” Indian fans in particular were ecstatic, with one hilariously commenting, “Someone please give him an Aadhaar card already,” and another nicknaming him “Edwinder!! Let’s go!!!”

Ed has been dropping hints about his new album Play, and earlier this month he revealed its emotional backstory. On Instagram, he described it as a joyful response to one of the darkest times in his life.

“Play was an album that was made as a direct response to the darkest period of my life,” he wrote. “Coming out of all of that, I just wanted to create joy and technicolour, and explore cultures in the countries I was touring.”

He also shared that he finished the album in Goa, India, calling those creative sessions some of the most fun and explorative of his life. “It’s a rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish, and encapsulates everything I love about music, the joy in it, and where I am in life as a human, a partner, and a father.”

With Sapphire just days away, fans are eager to see how Sheeran blends global influences with his signature sound—and clearly, India has played a special role in his musical journey this time.
