Gul Panag Mocks Pakistan Over IMF Loan: "We Don’t Need That Money, You Do"

Gul Panag is back on Twitter with her trademark wit, this time taking a swipe at a Pakistani journalist. Shahbaz Rana had tweeted about the IMF approving a $1 billion loan for Pakistan, gloating that India had “unsuccessfully tried to block the approval.” Rana’s tweet read, “In a humiliating defeat for India, the IMF executive board has approved the -$1 billion second loan tranche.”

Gul, never one to shy away from a sharp comment, quote-tweeted him with a sarcastic reply: “Sir, congratulations on another loan. With all due respect, we don’t need that money. You do. Just so you know, we haven’t taken any financial assistance from the IMF since 1993. All our loans were paid off by May 31, 2000.”

The IMF recently gave the green light to Pakistan’s economic reform program under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), which will release around -$1 billion to help Pakistan with its economic recovery.

However, India isn’t happy about this. The Indian government has raised concerns regarging the lon given to Pakistan amidst raising cross-border terrorism. Indian officials argue that such financial assistance undermines global norms and could damage the credibility of international institutions like the IMF.

“The IMF Board approved the first review of Pakistan's economic reform program under the EFF, enabling a disbursement of -~-$1 billion, reflecting strong program implementation and contributing to Pakistan’s economic recovery.”, The IMF, posted on its official social media.

This comes amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. Targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan in retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir, India recently launched Operation Sindoor. However, Pakistan has been carrying out drone attacks along India’s western border and the Line of Control (LoC). The Indian Army successfully intercepted these attacks, sending a clear message that it remains committed to defending India’s sovereignty.
