To show the war skills of Sambhaji Maharaj in the film as real, Vicky Kaushal took training in horse riding. Sambhaji Maharaj was a brave warrior, so horse riding and swordsmanship during the war were very important for him in this movie. Vicky took training from professional trainers and also practiced horse riding for hours.

To make his look completely real in the movie Chhaava, Vicky Kaushal also got his ears pierced for this film. He made this special change to adopt the traditional costumes and jewellery of Maratha warriors in this film. Along with getting his ears pierced, he also learned the gait, gestures and speaking style of Sambhaji Maharaj very well. Vicky Kaushal kept working very hard to fit himself into this character.
