Is India Getting Its Own 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine'? Here's What We Know (and Don’t Know!)

Everyone loves Brooklyn Nine-Nine. With eight seasons and endless re-watches, fans from all over have fallen for Jake Peralta’s immature detective antics (thank you, Andy Samberg) and Captain Holt’s deadpan brilliance (RIP Andre Braugher). The show’s charm lies in its witty portrayal of serious issues—race, gender, LGBTQ+—all served up with humour and heart.

Now, whispers suggest an Indian take on the show might be on the horizon. Teaming up with Deepak Dhar’s Banijay Asia (the folks behind Call My Agent: Bollywood), there’s buzz that Bollywood’s own Kunal Kemmu might step into Jake’s shoes—portraying an ace cop who’s excellent at solving crimes but hilariously immature. Director Rishab Seth (Dhoom Dhaam, Rishta.com) is reportedly attached to the project.

But here's the catch: despite the rumours, HT City confirmed that Kunal hasn't even been approached yet. So, for now, it’s still speculation.

Reactions online? Oh, they’re all over the place.

Some fans sound amused and curious:

“I’m kind of excited for it… I’d quite like to hear these jokes in Hindi if they adapt it right :)”

Others offer cautious optimism:

“They need not copy exactly… Loosely base the characters and Indianise the storyline. Kemmu as Peralta is a good casting call… His comic timing is great.”

Of course, diehard fans are more skeptical:

“Kunal Khemu can’t capture the essence of Jake Peralta. It will be bad! I just know it.”

“Why can’t they come up with something original instead of making cheap remakes?”

Some argue there’s no need for a remake at all, citing successful originals like Panchayat, Maa Chikitsalaya, and Mamla Legal Hai.

So, what do you think? Is an Indian Brooklyn Nine-Nine a brilliant idea waiting to happen—or should creators focus on fresh, homegrown stories?
