‘I’ve Swallowed Something’: Sunjay Kapur’s Final Words Before Fatal Heart Attack on Polo Field Revealed

Industrialist Sunjay Kapur, 53, passed away on Thursday in London after suffering a heart attack. The chairman of auto components giant Sona Comstar, Sunjay was also known to many as the former husband of Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor. However, he was far more than just a figure from the gossip pages—an influential businessman, avid polo player, and a close friend of British royalty, including Prince William.

Sunjay reportedly collapsed while playing polo in London. According to reports, just before he collapsed, witnesses heard him say, “I’ve swallowed something,” sparking speculation that he might have swallowed an insect—possibly a bee. This led to some unverified reports suggesting a bee sting could have triggered his heart attack. His friend and well-known public figure Suhel Seth told ANI that Sunjay had suffered a heart attack, “apparently after swallowing a bee during the polo match.” However, this has not been independently confirmed. In an official statement, Sona Comstar confirmed that the cause of death was a heart attack but did not provide further details.

Sunjay’s death has left many shocked—especially those who knew him not just for his high-profile relationships, but for his contributions to industry and his presence in elite social circles both in India and abroad.

His father-in-law, Ashok Sachdev (father of his current wife Priya Sachdev), told NDTV that the funeral will be held in Delhi. “The postmortem is currently underway. Once the necessary paperwork is complete, the body will be flown back to India for the last rites,” he said, adding that legal procedures may delay the funeral due to Sunjay’s U.S. citizenship.

Sunjay Kapur had been married to Karisma Kapoor from 2003 to 2016, and they have two children together. Prior to that, he was married to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani from 1996 to 2000. Since 2017, he had been married to model and actress Priya Sachdev, with whom he shared a son.

At the time of his death, Sunjay Kapur had an estimated net worth of -$1.2 billion (around ₹10,300 crore), placing him among India’s wealthiest individuals.
