Jennifer Lopez Sued for Sharing Paparazzi Photos of Herself; Faces \$150K Fine Per Image

Jennifer Lopez is facing a lawsuit after sharing paparazzi photos of herself on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). According to a BBC report, photographer Edwin Blanco and his agency, Backgrid, are seeking $150,000 in damages per photo, claiming she posted the images without their permission.
The photos in question show Lopez arriving at the Amazon MGM Studios and Vanity Fair party in Los Angeles the night before the Golden Globes this past January. Dressed in a white gown and a faux fur coat, Lopez posted the pictures with the caption “GG Weekend Glamour.” The images quickly circulated online, getting reshared by fans and fashion pages alike.
Blanco and Backgrid argue that Jennifer Lopez used the photos for commercial purposes. In their lawsuit, they claim she posted them to promote her public image, showcase the designers behind her outfit and jewelry, boost engagement on her social media, and support her personal brand and business partnerships.
They state in the legal filings: “Ms. Lopez’s unauthorized use of the images is commercial in nature, intended for the purpose of self-promotion. She used the photos to spotlight the designer of her clothing and jewelry, leveraging the publicity from the event to promote her fashion affiliations and brand partnerships.”
This isn’t the first time Lopez has been sued for sharing photos of herself taken by paparazzi. Similar lawsuits were filed against her in 2019 and 2020. Other celebrities like Dua Lipa, Gigi Hadid, and Khloe Kardashian have also faced legal trouble for posting paparazzi images without a license.
Backgrid and Blanco reportedly reached out to Lopez’s team in an attempt to settle the matter by agreeing on a license and payment for the images, but no agreement was finalized. As a result, the lawsuit has moved forward.
