Johnny Depp and Ridley Scott Join Forces for Dark New Take on Hyde

Johnny Depp is set to take on one of literature’s most iconic and sinister characters in a bold new collaboration with director Ridley Scott. The two are joining forces for Hyde, a fresh spin on the classic tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, starting as a graphic novel and eventually heading to the big screen. With Hyde fully in control and leaving a trail of chaos in his wake, the project reimagines the story from a darker perspective.

Developed by Scott’s production company in collaboration with Mechanical Cake, the story will debut as a graphic novel series this Halloween. According to Variety, Depp, Scott, and Mechanical Cake will co-own the property, which dives into a sinister new chapter of the original tale. In this version, Mr. Hyde has completely taken over, leaving no trace of Dr. Jekyll behind. Now a creature of chaos, Hyde lurks in the sewers of London and uses a mysterious serum to turn others into monsters like himself.

The graphic novel is created by Jesse Negron, CEO of Mechanical Cake, with artwork modeled on Depp’s likeness. Depp isn’t just lending his image — he’s actively shaping the character and story and is also expected to star in the eventual film adaptation, now in early development.

“To build within the world of Robert Louis Stevenson’s masterful characters and to be welcomed into the vision of Ridley Scott… and inexplicably having the opportunity to explore — it’s surprising to me. And hopefully surprising to him. It’s insane and beautiful to receive that trust from Ridley. A master,” Depp shared in a statement.

Early artwork from the graphic novel shows a shadowy, intense version of Hyde, bearing Depp’s unmistakable features. The visuals suggest a psychological horror vibe, rich in atmosphere and tension.

A sneak peek of Hyde will be revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, with a special panel featuring Jesse Negron, artist Anthony Francisco, and other key creatives from both the comic and film industries. They’ll discuss the process of bringing this twisted vision to life across both mediums.

With Depp in the lead role and Scott steering the creative vision, Hyde is shaping up to be a haunting fusion of gothic horror, psychological depth, and bold visual storytelling — both on the page and, soon, in theaters.
