Kantara Chapter 1 Surpasses ₹800 Crore, Becomes Highest-Grossing Indian Film of 2025

Kantara Chapter 1 has become the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025, recently crossing the ₹800 crore mark worldwide and surpassing Chhaava’s lifetime collections of ₹807 crore. Directed by Rishab Shetty, the film’s impressive box office run has made it the biggest commercial success of the year so far.
Hombale Films, the studio behind Kantara Chapter 1, announced that the film earned around ₹717 crore globally in just its first two weeks. The period action drama continued its strong performance in its third week, raking in an additional ₹38 crore net across India over the weekend. Within six days after that, it added approximately ₹92 crore worldwide, bringing its total to about ₹809 crore — surpassing Chhaava’s record.
However, some industry trackers like Sacnilk report slightly different figures, estimating Kantara Chapter 1’s worldwide earnings at ₹775 crore after 21 days, with ₹556.75 crore net in India and about $13 million from overseas markets. Despite these variations, the film’s momentum remains undeniable, especially with the English-language version slated for release later this month, expected to attract more global viewers.
In the list of top Indian box office hits of 2025, Kantara Chapter 1 leads, followed by Chhaava. Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara takes the third spot with ₹576 crore worldwide. Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Yash Raj Films’ spy thriller War 2 rank fourth and fifth, earning ₹500 crore and ₹365 crore respectively. Other notable releases this year include Mahavatar Narsimha, OG, and Lokah Chapter 1, each grossing over ₹300 crore. Among Hindi films, Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par made it into the top 10, just behind Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan.
Kantara Chapter 1, a sequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara, explores the rich cultural and mystical themes that captivated audiences in the original. Starring Rishab Shetty along with Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, and Gulshan Devaiah, it has become the second-highest-grossing Kannada film ever, just behind KGF Chapter 2. The film’s success continues to highlight the growing influence of Kannada cinema on the national stage.
