Mohanlal to Receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023 for Outstanding Contribution to Indian Cinema

Renowned Indian actor Mohanlal has been named the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced on Saturday. With a prolific career spanning over four decades, Mohanlal has acted in more than 400 films, predominantly in Malayalam, while also making significant contributions to Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada cinema.
The ministry made the announcement via a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, “On the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee, the Government of India is pleased to announce that Shri Mohanlal will be conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023.” The statement further highlighted the actor’s enduring influence, adding, “Mohanlal’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! The legendary actor, director, and producer is being honoured for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema. His unmatched talent, versatility, and relentless hard work have set a golden standard in Indian film history.”
The award will be formally presented at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23, 2025.
Mohanlal’s cinematic journey began with the Malayalam film Thiranottam in 1978, although its release was delayed due to censorship hurdles. His official screen debut came in 1980 with the romantic drama Manjil Virinja Pookkal, which marked the beginning of an illustrious career. Over the years, he has delivered iconic performances in acclaimed films such as Iruvar, Kireedam, Bharatham, Vanaprastham, and Kanmadam.
His contribution to Indian cinema has been widely recognised. He has received five National Film Awards, including two for Best Actor, a Special Jury Mention, a Special Jury Award for acting, and one for Best Feature Film. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019, acknowledging his immense contribution to the arts.
Most recently, Mohanlal appeared in Hridayapoorvam, a romantic comedy-drama directed by Sathyan Anthikad. Released during the Onam festival, the film also features Malavika Mohanan, Sangita Madhavan Nair, and Sangeeth Prathap in key roles.
Mohanlal’s recognition with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award cements his legacy as one of the greatest and most versatile actors in Indian cinema history.
