Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann inaugurates 30-bed Sant Attar Singh Ji Maharaj Hospital in Sangrur’s Cheema village

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday inaugurated the Sant Attar Singh Ji Maharaj Hospital in Cheema village of Sangrur district, marking a push to strengthen rural healthcare infrastructure. Built at a cost of ₹11.70 crore, the 30-bed hospital is expected to serve around 50,000 people across 15 villages, while also improving access to treatment for an estimated 35,000–40,000 residents in nearby areas.
During his visit, Mann interacted with patients and attendants and reviewed facilities at the hospital. He said that, until now, the absence of adequate medical infrastructure had forced patients to travel to Sangrur, Patiala and Ludhiana for treatment. With the new facility operational, patients will be able to access care locally. The hospital is equipped with modern machines and includes separate emergency and mother-child wards.
“The work on the medical college in the name of Sant Baba Attar Singh will also begin soon, and the state government has finalised arrangements for it,” Mann said, adding that the aim is to boost medical education and ensure quality healthcare in the region. He said the project would be executed on a priority basis.
Referring to the facility’s background, Mann said the Community Health Centre has been established at the birthplace of Sant Attar Singh Ji Maharaj, who contributed to education and social service. Named in his honour, the hospital has been expanded from its earlier capacities of 10 beds in 1975 and 20 beds subsequently, to 30 beds at present.
He said the upgraded centre would provide emergency and specialised services, including care for accident victims and critically ill patients, along with surgical procedures. The facility will also offer paediatric care, ENT and dental services, maternal and child healthcare, diagnostic services such as X-rays and blood tests, and treatment for those seeking de-addiction support.
Addressing drug abuse, Mann rejected suggestions to legalise drugs, calling the idea “irrational and illogical”. He said the state government is focusing on preventive and corrective measures by engaging youth in constructive activities. Referring to the anti-drug campaign ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’, he said it has disrupted supply chains, led to arrests of smugglers and confiscation of their properties. He added that the government plans to honour individuals who have provided actionable inputs against drug networks.
Highlighting governance initiatives, Mann said the AAP government has undertaken measures across sectors, with public funds being channelled into development works, including schools, hospitals and roads. He said 90 per cent of households are receiving free electricity, over 65,000 jobs have been provided without corruption, road infrastructure has improved, and the closure of toll plazas has resulted in daily savings of ₹70 lakh.
Cabinet Minister and local MLA Aman Arora and Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh were present at the event.
