New Delhi - India proudly retains its 40th rank among 132 global economies in the prestigious Global Innovation Index (GII) 2023, as announced by the World Intellectual Property Organization. This remarkable achievement reflects India's unwavering commitment to fostering innovation, propelling the nation on a remarkable trajectory of progress.
Over the past several years, India's ascent in the GII has been nothing short of impressive, progressing from a modest 81st place in 2015 to the current 40th rank in 2023. The nation's dedication to innovation has been particularly evident in its response to the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic. This commitment to innovation aligns perfectly with Prime Minister's vision of Atma Nirbhar Bharat, emphasizing self-reliance.
India's consistent climb in the GII rankings owes much to its vast knowledge capital, a thriving start-up ecosystem, and the commendable work carried out by both public and private research organizations. Various government departments, including the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Biotechnology, the Department of Space, and the Department of Atomic Energy, alongside ministries like Electronics and IT, Telecommunications, Agricultural Research & Education, and Health Research, have played pivotal roles in enriching the National Innovation Ecosystem. The Atal Innovation Mission has also been instrumental in expanding this ecosystem.
NITI Aayog, the National Institution for Transforming India, has tirelessly strived to optimize national efforts to promote policy-led innovation across various domains such as electric vehicles, biotechnology, nanotechnology, space, and alternative energy sources. Furthermore, NITI Aayog has played a vital role in expanding the innovation ecosystem at the state and district levels. Their continuous efforts have ensured that India's position on the global innovation stage is continuously monitored and evaluated, including in the GII.
The Global Innovation Index serves as a valuable tool for governments worldwide to assess innovation-driven social and economic transformations in their countries. It has become an essential policy instrument for governments to gauge their current standing and inspire progress.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has also been a steadfast partner in India's journey towards becoming an innovation-driven economy. In collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), NITI Aayog will virtually host the India Launch of the GII 2023 on September 29, 2023.
