18 Assam Laborers Killed as Truck Plunges Into Gorge in Arunachal; PM Modi Announces Compensation

At least 18 laborers from Assam's Tinsukia district were killed when a truck fell into a gorge in Arunachal Pradesh. Three people are still missing in the accident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the incident and announced compensation.
Defense Ministry PRO Lieutenant Colonel Mahendra Rawat said the accident occurred on December 8 on the Hayuliang-Chaglagam road in Anjaw district, located in the eastern part of the state. The truck was carrying 22 laborers from Tinsukia district. The remote area is about 12 kilometers from Chaglagam. 18 people died in the accident, and three are missing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the accident and announced compensation. The PMO tweeted: "Saddened by the loss of lives in an accident in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF will be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Rs. 50,000 would be given to the injured."
The accident was not reported to any local agency, contractor, or civilian. According to the statement, the incident came to light only when the sole survivor recounted his ordeal. It stated that 18 bodies have been sighted and are being recovered. The ADC of Hayuliang has informed the SP (Superintendent of Police) of Anjaw, who has reached the spot.
Tinsukia Circle Officer Jaydeep Rajak, who was on his way to the accident site, told PTI that according to initial information, these laborers were working on a project for a private contractor in Hayuliang. They were traveling in a dump truck which fell into a gorge approximately 1000 feet deep. Tinsukia Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mayank Kumar said that 22 laborers from the district had gone to Arunachal Pradesh for the construction of a hostel.
