AIIMS Patna Enters Limca Book of Records 2026 for Rare Spine Surgery Removing 35 mm Fish Bone

In a rare convergence of precision, perseverance and life saving brilliance, AIIMS Patna has etched its name into the Limca Book of Records (2026 Edition) with an extraordinary neurosurgical achievement, one where millimetres determined destiny and skill redefined possibility.

On March 9, 2025, a highly specialized neurosurgical team led by Dr. Saraj Kumar Singh, with critical assistance from Dr. Kranti Bhavana successfully performed a procedure never before recorded, the removal of the longest foreign body ever extracted from the human spine, a 35 mm x 2 mm fish bone lodged deep within the cervical (neck) spine of a 42 year old patient.

The procedure conducted in the Neurosurgical Operating Theatre at AIIMS Patna, commenced at 9 AM and concluded at 1:05 PM, spanning 4 hours and 5 minutes of relentless focus and surgical mastery.

Inside the OT, time slowed as precision took over. Navigating millimetre by millimetre through fragile spinal structures, the team achieved what many would deem nearly impossible. Zero damage to surrounding nerves, Controlled and precise extraction of the sharp object and Complete preservation of spinal integrity.

The successful removal of the fish bone marked not just the completion of a complex medical procedure but the beginning of a historic milestone now officially recognized in the Limca Book of Records 2026, placing AIIMS Patna firmly among the nation’s leading centres of surgical excellence.

“This was not just a surgery, it was a responsibility. Operating so close to the spinal cord leaves no room for error. Every step had to be exact,” said Dr. Saraj Kumar Singh.

“It was our teamwork, preparation and belief that turned the impossible into reality,” added Dr. Kranti Bhavana.

The Executive Director Prof. (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal lauded the surgical team for their exceptional precision and unwavering commitment, describing the achievement as a proud milestone for AIIMS Patna and a testament to its growing excellence in advanced neurosurgery.

This achievement transcends the removal of a foreign object. It stands as a powerful testament to the triumph of precision over peril. More importantly it sends a message of hope to patients, to practitioners and to the nation that even the most daunting medical challenges can be overcome through expertise, innovation and unwavering commitment.
