Air India Flight to London Crashes Near Ahmedabad Airport, 242 Onboard

Ahmedabad – An Air India flight bound for London’s Gatwick Airport crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon, triggering a massive emergency response. The aircraft, carrying 242 people, including 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew members, went down near the Meghaninagar area, just minutes after departure.
Dramatic visuals shared by news agency PTI showed thick plumes of black smoke rising from the crash site, not far from the airport perimeter.
Air India confirmed the incident in a brief statement: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad–London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest on our website and on our X handle.”
The flight took off at 1:38 p.m. and reportedly crashed within five minutes. The aircraft was under the command of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, with First Officer Clive Kundar assisting.
Government Responds Swiftly
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu expressed shock and devastation at the incident. “We are on highest alert. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action,” he said.
Rescue teams have been mobilized, and emergency medical aid is being rushed to the crash site. “My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families,” the minister added.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also spoken with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state's home minister, and the Ahmedabad police commissioner. He assured them of full support from the Central government.
Chief Minister Patel said he has instructed officials to begin rescue and relief operations without delay. “We are ensuring injured passengers receive immediate medical attention. A green corridor has been arranged to transport them swiftly to hospitals, where treatment is being prioritized,” he said in a statement.
In the aftermath of the crash, operations at Ahmedabad airport have been temporarily suspended.
