All Major Ghats in Varanasi Submerged as River Ganga Swells Across Uttar Pradesh

All major ghats in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, have been submerged as the Ganga’s water level continues to rise due to persistent rainfall in the region.
The river is steadily swelling from Varanasi all the way to Ballia, prompting the activation of flood outposts across the district. According to the reports, water has even begun flowing into low-lying areas along the Varuna River because of a reverse flow caused by the rising Ganga.
At Assi Ghat, much of the Subah-e-Banaras stage is now underwater. Water has reached the police outpost at Dashashwamedh Ghat, and the Maa Sheetla Temple has also been flooded.
The Central Water Commission reported that the Ganga’s water level in Varanasi rose to 68.94 metres on Wednesday, up from 68.42 metres the day before, climbing at a rate of 10 mm per hour. The danger level is set at 71.262 metres.
Water police inspector Rajkishore Pandey told that the famous Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat will now be held symbolically. Due to the rising water, devotees will no longer be allowed to watch the Aarti from boats.
Authorities have set up at least 46 relief camps across the district, said sub-divisional magistrate Amit Kumar.
Local resident Lakhan Kumar Sahani told ANI that the water is rising by one or two steps on the ghats every day. “It’s becoming difficult to watch the Ganga Aarti and operate boats,” he said. “The water level has risen, and this situation is likely to continue for the next two months. This happens every year.”
Meanwhile, rising water levels in the Ganga are also affecting Prayagraj and Sambhal, putting villages in low-lying areas at risk of flooding.
