Assam CM Accuses Gaurav Gogoi’s Wife of Spying; Congress Leader Hits Back

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday leveled serious allegations against Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, claiming that his British wife, Elizabeth Colburn, collected intelligence documents for a "Pakistani climate lobby." Speaking at a press conference, Sarma said the state government has documentary evidence to support the claims and promised to reveal the full details on September 10.
“His wife monitored Intelligence Bureau (IB) documents and quoted them. That means she must have someone inside the IB. This is a very serious allegation,” Sarma told reporters, as quoted by PTI. “I have documents to prove that Elizabeth Colburn was involved in collecting various intelligence reports.”
Sarma further alleged that Colburn had close ties with Pakistan through her work on climate-related issues and accused Gogoi of being a “Pakistani agent,” claiming the relationship with Pakistani entities continued until around 2017-18.
Gaurav Gogoi, who was recently appointed as the Assam Congress chief, strongly refuted the allegations. Dismissing the claims as baseless, he said the BJP was trying to sensationalize an old issue with a script that “sounds like a C-grade Bollywood movie” destined to flop.
“I went to Pakistan once, 12 years ago,” Gogoi clarified at a press conference. “My wife, an expert in public policy, worked on an international climate change project in South Asia over a decade ago. She spent a year in Pakistan before returning around 2012-13. She’s been working in a different role since 2015.”
Gogoi also questioned why the central government had taken no action over the past 11 years if there was any truth to the allegations.
“This is nothing but defamation,” he said. “They’re building up this so-called exposé like a film set to release on September 10. But it’s going to flop miserably.”
