Bihar Fisheries Department Targets Export-Oriented Units as State Ranks Fourth Nationally in Fish Production

A high-level review meeting of the schemes run by the state and central government by the Directorate of Fisheries, Department of Animal and Fisheries Resources, Bihar was concluded today in Patna. The meeting was chaired by Hon'ble Minister, Department of Animal and Fisheries Resources, Smt. Renu Devi, while it was conducted by Additional Chief Secretary Dr. N. Vijayalakshmi. Director Fisheries, Shri Abhishek Ranjan was present in the meeting.

In the meeting, Additional Chief Secretary Dr. Vijayalakshmi said that now Bihar will have to take steps towards exports as well, not limiting itself to production only. She directed that the officers should form a special committee which should prepare a concrete action plan for the establishment of an export oriented unit, so that fish can be exported to other countries. She also said that the state can contribute to fish exports only through surplus production.

During the review, he directed all the district fisheries officers to promote innovation practice and proper maintenance of the fisheries infrastructure present in the districts. Describing the development of Chaur area in Madhubani district under the cluster model as a positive example, she talked about implementing it in other districts as well.

The Honorable Minister, Mrs. Renu Devi directed the officials to pay special attention to ensure that fishermen get the benefits of the schemes on time. She said that it is necessary to complete all the construction works on priority basis before the onset of rains. She instructed the officials to work with full dedication and promptness so that Bihar can be made a leading state in the fisheries sector.

In the state level review meeting, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Jehanabad, Samastipur and Araria districts performed best on the basis of implementation of schemes and target achievement. These districts did remarkable work in the field of timely completion of construction works, reach of schemes to beneficiaries and innovation.

During the review, state schemes, Atmanirbhar Bihar (Saat Nischay 2) and schemes sponsored by the Central Government were reviewed. Bihar ranks fourth in fish production in the country. Instructions have been given that there is a need to work promptly to further improve one's ranking.

District Fisheries Officers of all districts and other officers of the department were present in this meeting.
