Bihar Scraps 1,611 Old Vehicles Since 2023 to Reduce Pollution, Offers Tax Exemptions

To reduce pollution in the state, special focus is being laid on improving the quality of vehicles. Vehicles older than 15 years and unusable in the state are being scrapped under a special policy. For this, vehicle scrapping centers are present at two places, Srinilium Scrapping Center in Patna and SK Enterprises in Vaishali. According to the data of the Transport Department, 1 thousand 611 applications have been received for scrapping of old vehicles since January 2023. These include 748 defense vehicles, 308 government vehicles and 555 private vehicles.

Exemption on scrapping of old vehicles

The government is encouraging vehicle owners to scrap vehicles older than 15 years. Tax exemption is being given for this. In this, vehicle owners are being given tax concession on registration of new vehicles on the basis of Certificate of Deposit (COD), 25 percent tax on scrapping of private vehicles and 15 percent discount on scrapping of commercial vehicles.

100 percent exemption in penalty

Government vehicles are being given full exemption in motor vehicle tax, green tax, road safety cess and penalty, 90 percent exemption in tax and 100 percent exemption in penalty to non-transport and transport vehicles. Government vehicles are being given full exemption in fees and additional fees (registration, fitness and additional fees etc.) levied under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, 90 percent exemption in non-transport vehicles and 100 percent exemption in additional tax, 90 percent exemption in transport vehicles and 100 percent exemption in additional tax.

Along with this, there is a provision to give one-time exemption to vehicle owners in all types of pending dues. This exemption is effective till March 31, 2026. The department has also given instructions to scrap 15-year old government vehicles.

Vehicle owners benefit on buying a new vehicle: Minister

Transport Minister Sheela Kumari said that a lot of work is being done for scrapping vehicles in the state in the last one year. Vehicle owners who scrap their old vehicles do not have to suffer any loss, so they are being given many types of facilities. In this, old vehicle owners are also being given the benefit of tax exemption on buying a new vehicle, so that there is no financial burden on the people. The department is working vigilantly for the convenience of the general public.

E-application for scrapping

For scrapping of private vehicles, an application has to be made on the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) https://vscrap.parivahan.gov.in portal, which will be purchased and scrapped by the RVSF Center
