BJP Releases First Candidate List For Bengal Polls; Fields Suvendu, Dilip Ghosh

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday released its first major candidate list for the West Bengal Assembly elections, announcing nominees for 144 seats following a meeting of the party's Central Election Committee — signalling the BJP's intent to mount a full-scale challenge in one of India's most fiercely contested electoral battlegrounds.
The list's most prominent name is Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who has been re-nominated from his stronghold of Nandigram — the seat where he famously defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2021. Former state BJP president Dilip Ghosh has been fielded from Kharagpur Sadar, with both nominations setting the stage for marquee contests that will draw national attention.
Continuing the party's strategy of blending political and public-facing profiles, former Indian cricketer Ashok Dinda has been re-nominated from the Mayna assembly seat, where he enjoys significant local recognition. Several film personalities and social sector figures have also secured places on the list.
Approximately 30 per cent of the 144 candidates are fresh faces, with the list said to have been drawn up on the basis of grassroots surveys and feedback from party workers. In North Bengal and Jangalmahal — regions where the BJP has historically performed strongly — sitting MLAs have largely been retained. The party has balanced anti-incumbency concerns with experience, projecting confidence in its electoral prospects across the state.
West Bengal goes to polls on April 23 and April 29, with results on May 4.
