BJP Suspends Former Union Minister RK Singh for Anti-Party Activities Amid Bihar Poll Turmoil

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suspended its senior leader and former union minister RK Singh from the party on charges of engaging in anti-party activities during the elections.

He has also been issued a show-cause notice asking why he should not be expelled from the party. Similar action has been taken against party rebels, MLC Ashok Agarwal and the Mayor of Katihar Usha Agarwal.

They had campaigned for their son Saurav Kumar Agarwal, who was contesting the Katihar assembly seat on a ticket of Vikassheel Insan Party against sitting BJP MLA and former Deputy CM Tarkishor Prasad.

Singh’s suspension has created fresh stir in Bihar politics, since the former union minister has long been considered one of the prominent faces of the party and is believed to have strong influence within the RSS and the party organisation.

The IAS officer-turned-politician has been an important figure in Bihar politics. He served as Minister of State for Power and later as Power Minister at the Centre.

Several important projects progressed during his tenure, including those related to power generation, distribution reforms, and rural electrification.

He was dissatisfied with the party leadership after losing the Lok Sabha elections 2024. He blamed party insiders for hatching a conspiracy against him that resulted in his defeat.

On several occasions, he has made public statements that did not align with the party’s official stance, including criticising party leadership over ticket distribution, local political equations, and party strategy.

Ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, he raised the political temperature by calling for unity within the Rajput community. Addressing a community meeting in September, he had said that if the Rajput community continues to remain divided, its political relevance will disappear in the coming years.

Singh had also targeted the BJP, saying that not even a single Rajput face is visible on the party’s platform.

Just before the Assembly polls, the former union Power Minister had alleged a massive Rs 62,000 crore scam in the Bihar government's power purchase agreement with Adani Power Limited, which includes the controversial allocation of 1,050 acres of land for a thermal power plant at a token annual lease of just Re1.

He had also alleged that the Bihar government signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to buy electricity from Adani Power at an inflated rate of Rs 6.75 per unit.
