Centre Seeks Singapore’s Legal Help in Zubeen Garg Death Probe

Days after Assam Government's appeal, the center has sent an official request to the authorities in Singapore for Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) in a case relating to the death of iconic singer and composer from Assam, Zubeen Garg, who died while on a yacht trip in Singapore on September 19. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said today that the letter was sent by the Ministry of Home Affairs to T Prabhakar, First Secretary of the Indian High Commission in Singapore, with a request to forward this to the Attorney General of Singapore.

The letter further asked the Indian High Commission in Singapore to update and forward the response of the Singapore authorities to the Ministry.

An iconic singer and composer from Assam, Zubeen Garg, died while on a yacht trip in Singapore on September 19. Although the autopsy in Singapore termed the cause of death as drowning, millions of Garg's fans and his family members allege negligence as the probable reason.

The allegations prompted the Assam Government to institute a CBI inquiry and a Special Investigation Team to probe into the cause of his death. The Assam Government has also issued look out notice against Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma, who were named in the FIR, to ensure they do not leave the country.
