CP Radhakrishnan elected Vice President; Sudershan Reddy’s challenge highlights Opposition unity

CP Radhakrishnan, the NDA’s nominee, has been elected as the 15th Vice President of India after defeating opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy in the vice presidential election held on Monday.

The results were announced shortly after voting concluded. Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes, while Reddy, backed by the INDIA bloc, received 300. The outcome was officially declared by Returning Officer PC Mody, who confirmed that the results would be forwarded to the Election Commission.

Radhakrishnan, currently serving as the Governor of Maharashtra, was nominated by the ruling NDA on August 17. He belongs to the Goundar-Kongu Vellalar OBC community from Tamil Nadu, a move seen as a strategic choice to strengthen the BJP’s outreach in southern India.

He went up against former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, who also hails from the south and was supported by the opposition INDIA alliance.

Voting began at 10 am and continued until 5 pm, with all elected and nominated members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha eligible to cast their votes. According to the Congress, 315 opposition MPs participated in the voting. The total strength of the electoral college stood at 781.

With this victory, Radhakrishnan becomes the 15th person to hold the office of Vice President of India.
