Eight killed as car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station triggers massive fire

At least eight people were killed and several others injured after a powerful explosion occurred in a car near Gate No. 1 of Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening, officials said.

According to the Delhi Fire Department, a call was received around 6:30 pm reporting a blast in a parked vehicle. The explosion caused three to four nearby vehicles to catch fire, leading to a massive blaze that was visible from adjoining roads.

“Fire tenders were immediately dispatched, and the fire has been brought under control. Preliminary reports suggest a CNG cylinder explosion, but the exact cause is yet to be determined,” a senior fire officer said.

Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos, with commuters and pedestrians running for safety as flames engulfed multiple cars near the busy metro gate. Several injured persons were quickly shifted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital, where emergency teams are attending to them.

Ambulances and forensic teams have been deployed at the site, while the area around Red Fort and the metro station has been cordoned off by the police.

Officials said a detailed probe is underway to ascertain whether the explosion was accidental or involved any foul play.

Further details are awaited.
