Election Commission Doubles BLO Remuneration: Annual Pay Rises from ₹6,000 to ₹12,000

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a significant increase in the annual remuneration for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and BLO Supervisors.

The raise will be effective from 2025, through a notification was issued on July 24.

This decision is being celebrated as a pivotal step to empower the grassroots workforce of India’s electoral system.

According to the ECI notification: BLOs will now receive a minimum annual remuneration of Rs. 12,000, up from the previous Rs. 6,000. BLO Supervisors will be paid a minimum of Rs. 18,000 annually, compared to Rs. 12,000 earlier.

An additional incentive of Rs. 2,000 will be provided to BLOs for participating in Special Summary Revisions or other special electoral drives, doubling the previous Rs. 1,000 incentive.

Sibin C, IAS, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Punjab, welcomed the move, stating, “This progressive decision by the ECI will significantly motivate and empower our Booth Level Officers, the frontline warriors of our electoral system. BLOs play a critical role in maintaining voter list integrity, conducting door-to-door verifications, and ensuring voter participation. By enhancing their remuneration, the ECI has recognized their dedication, paving the way for greater transparency, accountability, and efficiency in Punjab’s electoral process.”

The CEO further affirmed that the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer’s office is committed to the welfare and capacity building of field-level officers. A detailed directive will be issued to all Deputy Commissioners in the state to ensure the timely implementation of the revised remuneration structure.

This reform is seen as more than just a financial enhancement; it is a morale booster that underscores the ECI’s commitment to inclusive, credible, and professionally managed elections. The increased remuneration strengthens the foundation for upcoming electoral activities, including the Special Intensive Revision and preparations for future elections.
