Heavy Rains Trigger Landslides, Floods in Himachal and Uttarakhand, Killing Three in Mandi

Heavy overnight rains caused severe damage in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, triggering landslides, flash floods, and house collapses, officials reported on Tuesday. At least three members of a family died in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh, while hundreds, including 200 students, were rescued from flood-hit areas in Dehradun. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inspected the situation in Uttarakhand as rescue and relief efforts continue in both states.

Landslides and Floods in Himachal Pradesh

In Himachal Pradesh, relentless rain led to landslides and flash floods in Mandi district. A house collapsed in Bragta village, killing two women and a child. Mandi’s Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan told PTI that three bodies were recovered, two people were rescued, and the injured have been taken to the hospital.

Floodwaters swept through Dharampur bus stand, damaging over two dozen Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses, shops, houses, and vehicles. One person is still missing. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri posted on Facebook about the extensive damage to the bus stand, buses, shops, and nearby facilities.

In Shimla, heavy rain—measuring 141 mm in 12 hours—caused landslides that buried vehicles near Himland and blocked the main circular road, disrupting travel for commuters and schoolchildren. Gautam and Rahul Shukla, who narrowly escaped the landslide, told PTI about the terrifying experience.

The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said 650 roads, including three national highways, remain blocked. Over 1,200 power transformers and 160 water supply schemes have been damaged. Since June 20, rain-related accidents and incidents have claimed 412 lives in the state.

Cloudburst and Flooding in Uttarakhand

In neighboring Uttarakhand, a heavy cloudburst hit Dehradun on Monday night, flooding parts of Tapovan, Sahastradhara, and the IT Park area. Two people are reported missing. The Karligaad rivulet overflowed, causing extensive flooding and damage to nearby properties. Several residents were evacuated to safer areas.

The swelling stream also caused the collapse of a key bridge, further damaging properties along the banks. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued 200 students stranded at Devbhoomi Institute after the campus was flooded. The SDRF praised their team’s swift and careful rescue operation.

Chief Minister Dhami visited affected areas including Sahastradhara, Raipur, and Maldevta. He said the damage to homes and government property is severe, livelihoods have been disrupted, and connectivity has been hit in many places. He added that the water levels of rivers are rising and that all departments are working urgently to restore normalcy. Dhami also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah had contacted him and assured full support.

In Maldevta, a 100-meter stretch of road was washed away, and heavy waterlogging left offices and vehicles stranded in the IT Park area. Local resident Hrithik Sharma described being stuck since early morning with his car submerged and offices flooded.

Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman confirmed damage in Sahastradhara, Maldevta, and Mussoorie, with two to three people missing in Dehradun and a possible death reported from Mussoorie, which is still being verified.
