Himachal Pradesh Monsoon Disaster: Death Toll Rises to 80 Amid Widespread Destruction

Relentless monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh, with the death toll climbing to 80, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). For over two weeks, the state has faced severe weather, including landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts.

Between June 20 and July 7, 14 people lost their lives in cloudbursts, eight in flash floods, one in a landslide, and others due to electrocution, drowning, and falls caused by heavy rain. Of the total, 52 deaths have been directly linked to these disasters.

Mandi has been the worst affected district, reporting 17 deaths following intense rainfall. Kangra follows with 11 fatalities. Kullu, Kangra, Shimla, and Mandi have suffered extensive damage to crops, roads, bridges, and power infrastructure.

The monsoon’s impact has been severe. At least 128 people have been injured, 320 houses fully destroyed, and 38 partially damaged. More than 10,000 livestock and poultry have perished. Damage to public infrastructure is estimated at ₹692.65 crore.

The SDMA confirmed 23 flash floods, 19 cloudbursts, and 16 landslides so far, severely affecting connectivity and daily life in many hill districts.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on the ground with relief and rescue operations. Several relief camps have been set up to support affected families.

As the situation is still dangerous, authorities have advised people to avoid areas that are still under construction, steep slopes, and riverbanks.
