"I Was Wrong to Doubt Them": Shashi Tharoor Reacts to India's Historic Win Over England

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday celebrated India’s thrilling six-run victory over England in the fifth and final Test at The Oval, calling it a remarkable comeback that leveled the series 2-2.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Tharoor praised the Indian team’s resilience and singled out fast bowler Mohammed Siraj for his match-winning performance.
“Words fail me… WHAT A WIN! 🇮🇳🏏 Absolutely exhilarated & ecstatic for #TeamIndia on their series-clinching victory against England!” Tharoor posted. “The grit, determination, and passion on display were simply incredible. This team is special.”
Tharoor also admitted he had doubted India’s chances the previous day. “I am sorry that I expressed a spasm of doubt about the outcome yesterday. But Mohammed Siraj never stopped believing! Shabash to our heroes,” he wrote.
India’s dramatic win came on a tense final morning in London, with England needing only 35 runs and four wickets in hand. But Siraj turned the game on its head with a fiery spell, leading India to a stunning win that had looked unlikely.
Siraj, who claimed nine wickets in the match, was named Player of the Match. After the game, the 31-year-old revealed how he had started the day with a clear intention: “I woke up in the morning, checked Google, and set a ‘Believe’ emoji as my wallpaper. I told myself I would do it for the country,” he said, visibly proud and emotional.
Despite missing pace ace Jasprit Bumrah, India’s bowling unit rose to the occasion. Siraj was well-supported by Prasidh Krishna, and together they dismantled England’s lower order. The final moment came when Siraj delivered a perfect yorker to dismiss Gus Atkinson, sealing the victory with England just six runs short.
